"Landscape and Belief: A View Camera in the Himalayas" - Kenneth Hanson
For two decades Kenneth Hanson has been taking dramatic black-and-white photographs of the Himalayas. The regions he visited stretch from the Karakoram of Pakistan to Kangchenjunga in eastern Nepal. The mountains provide a unique experience—call it beauty, joy, terror, awe—that points beyond our reasonable world and takes us to the boundary between life and death. For the people of the mountains, this encounter is woven into their beliefs. There is a dialog between an older shaman-led sacrificial culture and various forms of Tibetan Buddhism. Increasingly the modern world intrudes. Hanson will discuss these interactions and show photographs from his book, Himalayan Portfolios.
NovemberNovember 1 & 2, 2pmWeekend Afternoon Documentary Film - Tibet, Cry of the Snow Lion
This award-winning feature-length documentary brings audiences to the long-forbidden "rooftop of the world" with unprecedented richness of imagery... from rarely-seen rituals in remote monasteries to horse races with Khamba warriors; from brothels and slums in the holy city of Lhasa to magnificent Himalayan peaks still traveled by nomadic yak caravans. The dark secrets of Tibet's recent past are powerfully chronicled through personal stories and interviews, and a collection of undercover and archival images never before assembled in one film. New York Times reviewer David Kehr said of it, "A more concise and affecting summation of the Tibetan crisis would be hard to imagine." (Earthworks Films. Directed by Tom Piozet. Written by Victoria Mudd and Sue Peosay. 2003. 104 minutes)

November 15 & 16, 2pmWeekend Afternoon Documentary Films- Kundun
In chronicling the life of the 14th Dalai Lama, Kundun defies conventional narrative in favor of an episodic approach, presenting a sequential flow of events from the life of the young leader of Buddhist Tibet. From the moment he is recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama in 1937 to his exile from Tibet in the wake of China's invasion, the Dalai Lama is seen as an enlightened spiritual figurehead. (De Fina-Cappa Films Directed by Martin Scorsese. Written by Melissa Matheson. Music by Philip Glass. 1997. 134 minutes)

IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (1934) 105 mins.
This wonderfully fizzy Clark Gable/Claudette Colbert pairing produced a code-flaunting, sweet-tart screwball comedy. Rebellious heiress Ellie Andrews (Colbert) is being held captive on her father’s yacht. The elder Andrews has whisked Ellie away and out of the clutches of brand-new son-in-law, society aviator King Westley. Ellie jumps ship and eventually winds up on a bus headed back to King. Reluctantly, she must accept the help of out-of-work reporter Peter Warne (Gable) who doesn't give her any choice: either she sticks with him until he gets her back to her husband or he'll blow the whistle on Ellie to her father. Either way, Peter gets what (or he thinks!) he wants...a really juicy newspaper story.
Sunday, July 12, 2009, 2 pmWEEKEND COMEDY FILM FESTIVAL
BRINGING UP BABY (1938) 102 mins.
A nonstop string of calamities ensue when Susan Vance (Katharine Hepburn), a dizzy young socialite, takes a shine to Dr. David Huxley (Cary Grant), a sober paleontologist. Soon to be married, Dr. Huxley is awaiting a rare bone required to complete his brontosaurus skeleton while trying to secure a gift of a million dollars for his museum. A simple encounter on the golf course inextricably binds him up with Susan's escapades and threatens his chance of getting the money. Things go from bad to worse when Baby, a tame leopard, is shipped to her NYC apartment. The plot thickens when George the Terrier steals and buries the priceless bone and Baby escapes at the same time a rogue circus leopard is on the loose. The resulting wacky twists on mistaken identities bring the film to a brilliant and funny conclusion.

The Man on the Roof

1976, 110 mins. R. Considered by some to be the finest Swedish film ever made, it broke new ground by realistically showing the police as less then honest and heroic. Based on the novel by Sjöwall and Wahlöö, Stockholm Detective Martin Beck must investigate the grisly murder of police Lieutenant Nyman who was known for brutality and corruption. Despite fatigue and sore feet, Beck and his partner Rönn use their years of experience to methodically follow the clues and solve the case.

Kopps

2003, 90 mins. NR. The sleepy town of Högboträsk has no crime, aside from an occasional wandering cow. The town’s three cops spend their time eating waffles, drinking coffee, or, in Benny’s case, daydreaming of American style shoot-outs. But a crime-free village has no use for a police force and the station is slated for closure. Quietly, they begin their own crime wave, with chaotic and unpredictable results.

About the Film: This is an intimate portrait of a great artist and ardent environmentalist. His greatest photographs would seek to capture "the instant of revelation - of timelessness" amidst the natural world. Along the way, they would document the end of the infinite on the American continent, and its precarious passage into human hands.

Friday, April 15, 2011 - 12:15 pmThe Art Of The Steal
THE ART OF THE STEAL reveals how a private collection of paintings became the prize in a battle between one man's vision and the forces of commerce and politics. Ever since Barnes' death in 1951, the fight over its future has been underway. On one side are the artists, historians and lawyers defending Barnes' wish that the entire collection (valued at over $25 billion) never be moved, loaned or sold; and on the other side, the politicians, huge charitable trusts, tourism boards and rich socialites pushing to relocate it to downtown Philadelphia. This is a real-life David vs. Goliath story, a tale of suspense in which hangs the fate of some of the most sublime works of art ever created. (101 minutes).
NOTE: Spring 2011 films will NOT be shown at the museum. Instead, the films will be shown in the CUE Building, Rm 134.
